Google Ads Preview Tool
Paste your headlines and descriptions: you see your search ad the way Google can put it together, on desktop and on mobile, with every line that goes over the limits.
A responsive search ad takes 3 to 15 headlines of 30 characters and 2 to 4 descriptions of 90 characters. Google puts together up to 3 headlines and 2 descriptions each time the ad shows, and tests the combinations to serve the best-performing ones.

Indicative preview, drawn by the tool: Google picks the headlines and descriptions for each impression, and the layout changes with the screen. Limits: Google Ads API documentation, read on 24 October 2026.
Your Ad Is Ready. What About Your Account?
A well-written ad does not make up for a badly set account. A Google Ads audit shows where your budget goes and what holds your conversions back.

How the preview is built
Headlines: 3 to 15, up to 30 characters Descriptions: 2 to 4, up to 90 characters Paths: up to 15 characters each
The tool takes your first three headlines and your first two descriptions and draws them as a search ad: the Sponsored label, your domain followed by the paths, the headline line, then the descriptions. The “Another combination” button picks other headlines and descriptions at random, as Google does from one impression to the next.
Every line is counted: Google rejects a headline over 30 characters, a description over 90 and a path over 15, as well as two identical headlines or descriptions.
Two things to check before you publish
- Headlines that read on their own: Google puts them together in the order it chooses. A headline that needs another one to make sense may show without it.
- Headlines that say different things: five ways of repeating the same argument give Google only one idea to test. Vary the offer, the proof and the action.
Frequently asked questions
How many characters for a Google Ads headline?
30 characters per headline and 90 per description. A responsive search ad takes 3 to 15 headlines and 2 to 4 descriptions.
How many headlines does Google show at once?
Up to 3 headlines and 2 descriptions: those are the positions a headline or a description can be pinned to. Google picks which ones to show each time.
Should you pin your headlines?
Google Ads Help advises against it for a general campaign: pinning reduces the number of possible combinations. Keep it for a message that must always appear.
